FT Architects teamed up with Bruce Oldfield OBE to create a glamorous and cosy design, The Egg, for BowWow Haus London which is now on display at London’s St Pancras International.  Director Louise Turley reveals the process behind their stylish kennel and the important inspiration of three border terriers.

How would you sum up you and your work?

Our role is to help our clients achieve their aspirations. We’re good listeners, easy to work with and great at delivery!

How did you hear about this project?

Jay Goulde of the Outdoor Arts Foundation called us out of the blue last year – completely unexpectedly, from America!  We were intrigued …

What first attracted you and your colleagues to get involved?

It was such an interesting brief – and so nice not to have to worry about damp courses and insulation!

Did you have any particular motivation?

We all like dogs at FT Architects! Bertie, my three -year-old border terrier, was the model for our designs and a creative influence. Bertie is a big part of our family.  He brings a lot of love and fun to our lives.

What about your creative inspiration?

We wanted to do something sculptural and glamorous – but also practical.  We worked through various ideas before arriving at the egg.

We collaborated with Bruce Oldfield OBE who also has two lovely border terriers – Baz and Boo.  They like to lean and to curl up against things.  The egg is a really convenient shape for this, and the padded velvet interior and feather packed cushion is really cosy.

Who is the dog in mind that you’ve created this kennel for?

Bertie, Boo and Baz – and all other border terriers out there!  They’re a little bit scruffy looking, which is a great contrast to the elegance of the egg.

Where would be your dream location if you could see your kennel displayed anywhere in the world?

It’s not just a work of art, and it’s really an indoor kennel … so a luxurious hotel would be ideal …

Who do you imagine bidding for your work?

I think it would appeal to someone who loves art and fashion.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?

This whole process has been such fun.  We are thrilled to be part of this event, and hope the auction will be a huge success.
